Piling On The CEPAC Subsea Cylinders |
|
|
Air Power & Hydraulics has completed a contract for a leading piling technology company; to provide power units and hydraulic cylinders for operation of the piling equipment installing the frame of an oil rig in south-east Asia.
Designed and built to operate in a subsea environment the cylinders act as dampers to arrest the motion of the opening sleeve and counterweight assemblies and provide controlled opening of the frame. Other cylinders operate to release the latches to allow the frame to fall open. They will also enable the sleeve and counterweight assemblies to be closed in a submerged situation, hydraulically powered to work at 1000m water depth.
The cylinders were required to have equal volumes of oil on both sides; so that when the rod is pushed in, the oil is pushed through a manifold and returned to the opposite side of the cylinder producing damping.
The cylinders customised from APH’s CEPAC Subsea Cylinders range were 280mm bore x 120mm rod. Due to constraints of space within the piling supports and piling frame a substantial redesign was needed. APH Managing Director commented, “We knew we could streamline the cylinder to fit the space but the challenge which we met was to produce lighter weight without losing strength.”
