Luxury yachts in the Caribbean are today enjoyed by transatlantic travellers thanks to the new generation of keels which have been designed by an innovative Italian Keel Manufacturer : APM Keels (http://www.apm-keels.com). These keels can be retracted allowing the yachts to berth in the more shallow harbours of the Caribbean.
Air Power & Hydraulics produce the special bespoke ported rod hydraulic cylinders which are required. Ported rod cylinders operate by the rod remaining stationary while the body of the cylinder moves. In this application, the rod is attached to the yacht while the body of the cylinder is inside the keel. Hence when the cylinder retracts, the whole keel assembly moves up into the hull.
Based on APH’s CEPAC subsea design these ported rod cylinders have special swivel bearings at either end which are made from Duplex stainless steel with aluminium bronze spherical bearings. The cylinders can range from 100 mm bore with 63 mm rod to 250 mm bore with 120 mm rod.
Over the past eight years APH have supplied to APM-Keels these special ported rod cylinders for a number of the keel systems and are continuing to develop this technology to continue to meet with the Keel manufacturer’s innovative designs in the future. |
